CHAPTER FIVE
It may have been ninety degrees outside in the Florida sun, but David felt a drafty chill in the air at his parents' home.
"David, we were prepared for you to spend the rest of your vacation at Andrea's house. But, now you're telling us that you're throwing away an opportunity to begin med school at Columbia University and lose an entire year, hoping to get into University of Miami?"
Mark glared at his son. "Are you crazy?"
David didn't think his parents would be happy about his announcement, but he never expected them to freak out this badly. His mother had already stormed out of the room.
"No, I'm not crazy. I'm in love. Remember what that feels like?"
"I know what love feels like, but what you're feeling is lust. When you love someone, you want to be the best you can. A man wants to offer his woman the best life by being true to his own ambitions and career. You've wanted to be a doctor since you got your first toy doctor's kit as a kid. So, two nights with some hot pussy, and you want to give up all your dreams?"
David jumped off the chair. "You know Andrea. How can you speak of her like that?"
Mark nodded his head and waved to David to sit down. "You're right. Sorry, son. Nothing against Andrea. She's a fine woman. But, I bet even she would give you this advice. Getting into Columbia med school is a huge accomplishment, one that you've worked hard for. I'm sure if it were her son, Jason, Andrea would say the same thing your mother and I are right now."
David remained standing. He wasn't buying his father's pitch.
"No. I've made up my mind. I can still go to med school. U of M is one of the finest in the nation, and I won't lose anything but one year of time. And I can work during this year to help with the expenses. I don't have to tell you med school's not cheap."
Mark stood up and moved in close to David. "I didn't want to do this, David. Your mother and I spoke earlier, and we agree. If you don't leave for New York next week as planned, you're on your own financially. So, you'd better get one helluva great job, if you intend to put yourself through med school."
David grabbed the bag he had packed to bring to Andrea's. "Fine. If that's how you're going to respond to the biggest decision of my life, then I am on my own."
He slammed the front door on his way out. He was about to sprint down the street to Andrea's, but he didn't want to bring his anger to her house. He threw his bag in the back of his car and drove off until he could blow off some steam.
* * *
Thirty minutes later, he pulled up to Andrea's house and let himself in. He could hear her voice. Was someone there?
As David continued down the hall to her bedroom, he realized she was talking on the phone.
